Sri Lanka, April 30 -- The Colombo Magistrate's Court has ordered that evidence be heard on May 16 in the ongoing magisterial inquiry into the death of a 25-year-old man who died while in police custody following his arrest by the Welikada Police.

The directive was issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake after reviewing a request from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The deceased, identified as Nimesh Sathsara, was allegedly assaulted while in custody.

The court also ordered that summons be issued to five witnesses to appear on the next hearing date.

The CID stated that testimony is expected from a total of 22 witnesses over the course of the inquiry.
