Sri Lanka, Sept. 22 -- A Colombo Additional Magistrate today (22) ordered former State Minister Sajin de Vass Gunawardena to provide a written explanation to the court on December 16 regarding his failure to pay income tax amounting to over Rs. 36.9 million owed to the government.

The order was issued when a case filed against the former MP by the Department of Inland Revenue was recalled in court.

The case concerns the evasion of Rs. 36,975,959 in income tax during the years 2010 to 2013.

Making submissions, Attorney Dinesh Perera, appearing on behalf of the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue, stated that the defendant, a businessman, had failed to pay personal income tax during that period, causing a loss of over Rs. 36.9 million...
