SriLanka, Jan. 27 -- The Court of Appeal has directed the Jaffna Municipal Council and the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to submit a report detailing measures taken to mitigate air pollution in the Jaffna area. The order followed a writ petition filed by Dr Umasuki Nadarajah, a resident of Jaffna, seeking legal intervention to curb deteriorating air quality.
The petition was heard before a bench comprising Court of Appeal President Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Priyantha Fernando. During the proceedings, Senior Counsel Ravindranath Dabare, appearing for the petitioner, highlighted that open-air garbage burning is a primary cause of local pollution.
