Sri Lanka, March 6 -- The Colombo High Court has sentenced a couple to death after they were found guilty of torturing their two-year-old adopted child, leading to the child's death.

The verdict was delivered following a trial that revealed the horrific abuse suffered by the toddler.

The court ruled that the couple was responsible for the child's death and imposed the capital punishment accordingly.

High Court Judge Sujeewa Nissanka delivered the verdict after a lengthy trial, ruling that Mohamed Ali Mohamed Usman and Mohamed Fahim Fatima Sifana, residents of Maligawatta, were guilty of murder.

The Attorney General had filed the case against the couple for the child's murder, which occurred on or around May 11, 2018.
