Sri Lanka, Jan. 20 -- A joint statement issued by nine trade unions stated that a serious national crisis is being created due to the development of the Eastern Terminal of the Colombo Port.

A portion of that terminal was developed, and the estimated cost to develop the remaining portion is US$ 486 million.

The joint statement of the trade unions stated that the port has the technology, knowledge and experience to develop this segment.

However, they point out that the proposal to sell 49% of the terminal to Adani company and another company affiliated with them for US$ 700 million over a 35-year period has no economic significance.

Due to this the government should withdraw the relevant resolution, the trade union statement said.
