Sri Lanka, Sept. 3 -- The Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, today stated that Sri Lanka is in crucial need of new climate-related laws to mitigate the expected negative effects on its climate.

Speaking at a special meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Climate Change, Mr. Premadasa warned that Sri Lanka's paddy yields are predicted to decrease by 12% to 41% by the year 2060.

He also highlighted that infrastructure losses due to climate disasters are estimated to be around 3.8 billion rupees.

He added that climate-related catastrophes will cause Sri Lanka to lose 3.68% of its annual GDP until 2050.
