Sri Lanka, May 2 -- A 47-year-old Chinese national has been arrested in Manila by the Philippines' National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on suspicion of espionage.
The arrest occurred on April 29 after he was allegedly found with an electronic eavesdropping device in the trunk of his car.
The suspect was apprehended while his grey Mitsubishi Adventure was parked outside the headquarters of the Philippine Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Intramuros, Manila.
This incident follows recent warnings from a Senate inquiry regarding potential efforts by China to influence democratic processes in the Philippines, amidst ongoing tensions in the South China Sea.
The Philippines is scheduled to hold its midterm elections on May 12.
