Sri Lanka, July 16 -- Residents of the area allege that the coastal strip in the Chilaw - Welihena area is at risk of severe erosion.

A unique natural rock ridge runs parallel to the coastline from Chilaw to Ambakadawila, and residents say this formation has traditionally protected the area from coastal erosion.

However, despite the presence of this natural barrier, they report that around 500 meters of the coastal strip in Welihena has already been severely eroded.
