Sri Lanka, Sept. 17 -- Construction work on the suspended section of the Central Expressway, stretching from the Kadawatha Interchange to Mirigama, has officially recommenced today (17).

The ceremony was held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The 37-kilometre first phase is being restarted at a cost of approximately Rs. 229 billion.

Funding will be provided through a concessional loan from the General Treasury and the Exim Bank of China.

The project is expected to be completed by September 2028.

While the second section of the expressway, from Mirigama to Kurunegala, is already complete, progress on this initial phase had been halted in the past due to various challenges.
