Sri Lanka, Feb. 21 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the appointment of a committee to review and refine the draft bill on the prevention of terrorism, following amendments proposed by the Supreme Court.

The Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 48 of 1979 was introduced to address national security threats at the time. Later, the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 12 of 2022 was enacted as an interim measure to establish a broader national security framework. A subsequent draft bill on counterterrorism was challenged in the Supreme Court, leading to further revisions by the Legal Draftsman.
