Sri Lanka, Feb. 11 -- The Paddy Marketing Board Act No. 14 of 1971, which governs the purchase, marketing, and processing of paddy and rice, has remained unchanged for 54 years without updates to reflect contemporary circumstances.

Given the time required for a comprehensive revision, the government has decided to urgently amend the act to introduce a licensing system aimed at regulating irregular stockpiling and storage of paddy and rice, which has become a pressing issue.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation to take necessary steps to amend the act.
