Srilanka, Nov. 15 -- A research project involving the use of beehive fences to mitigate the Human-Elephant Conflict was launched in Galle, under the patronage of Galle District Secretary W. A. Dharmasiri.
The research team from Ruhuna University, which is conducting the study, suggests that this 'beehive fence' method can be successfully utilised for Human-Elephant Conflict mitigation, as wild elephants show a fear of the presence and sound of bees.
Accordingly, the research project was carried out using a three-acre cultivation plot in the Gannoruwa area of the Hambantota District, where beehives were interconnected to form a protective barrier.
