Sri Lanka, May 6 -- A police sergeant attached to the Padiyathalawa Police Station in Ampara has died by suicide, using his service weapon.

The incident reportedly occurred around 5:20 this morning (6) while he was on duty at the station's guardhouse.

The deceased was a 59-year-old father of three from the Bibila Diyakobala area, who was due to retire next year.

Reports indicate his wife passed away from cancer last year.

Last night, he had requested guardhouse duty, citing poor eyesight.

Padiyathalawa Police are investigating the incident.
