Srilanka, Nov. 13 -- The Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB) decided to cut down and destroy 5,000 coconut trees in the Matara district due to a rapidly spreading disease affecting coconut palms.

The disease, known as "Weligama Wilt," is identified as causing damage to the coconut tree's crown through an invasive insect. The CCB noted that 6,200 coconut trees solely in the Matara district contracted the disease.

However, reports indicate that some cultivators are opposing the CCB officials when they attempt to destroy the affected trees.

Similarly, maize farmers in the Ampara-Uhana area are facing difficulties due to a 'Sena' caterpillar infestation.

They requested that authorities introduce an effective remedy for the damaged crops.
