Sri Lanka, Dec. 21 -- The Department of Irrigation has confirmed that 36 out of the 73 major reservoirs in Sri Lanka are currently spilling over.
In addition to these large-scale tanks, approximately 52 medium-sized reservoirs are also discharging excess water following the recent heavy rainfall.
Despite the widespread spilling, L.S. Suriyabandara, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology and Disaster Management), has assured the public that this does not currently pose a threat of major flooding.
He emphasised that the release of water is part of the natural spillover process and should not be a cause for unnecessary panic.
While the reservoirs are being managed, the department remains watchful of river levels.
