Srilanka, Nov. 11 -- According to the National Nutrition and Micronutrient Survey (2022), nearly 1 in 3 women (29.6%) are overweight, and 1 in 8 (12.6 %) aged 18-60 years are obese in Sri Lanka.

The highest rates of overweight and obesity were recorded among women aged 50-60 years.

The survey defined:

Overweight as a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 25 kg/m and 29.9kg/m

Obesity as a BMI greater than 30.9kg/m.

The study revealed that urban women show the highest combined overweight/obesity rate at 57.5%. Conversely, underweight remains notable in the Central (18.9%) and Estate (22.8%) sectors.

Overall, the report concluded that 45.2% of women are considered to have normal weight, and 12.6 % are classified as underweight.
