Sri Lanka, March 22 -- The Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake, announced that the nominations process for the 2025 Local Government Elections was conducted across 25 districts from March 17 to 12 noon yesterday (20).
Nominations were accepted for a total of 336 local government institutions, with nearly 2,900 groups contesting the elections. Around 2,260 of these groups represent political parties.
Ratnayake stated that nearly 425 nominations were rejected. He explained that nominations are reviewed by a Nomination Board, which follows Section 28 of the Act. Submissions failing to meet the required criteria are rejected, and each rejected group is informed in writing about the reasons for the rejection.
