Sri Lanka, April 27 -- Authorities have arrested at least 19 people in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura in India for their online reactions to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.

Those arrested include a Member of the Legislative Assembly, a journalist, students, a lawyer, and retired teachers.

The majority of the arrests were made due to social media activity.

Assam accounts for the highest number of arrests, with 14 individuals detained.

The first arrest was of a sitting MLA charged with sedition for alleging government conspiracy related to the Pahalgam attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack.
