Sri Lanka, April 17 -- Today (17) marks the 109th birth anniversary of the late Sirimavo Bandaranaike, who made history as the world's first female Prime Minister. Several commemorative events were organised today to mark the occasion.

Having led the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to victory in the General Election held on July 21, 1960, Mrs. Bandaranaike assumed the office of Prime Minister.

Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike (April 17, 1916 - October 10, 2000) holds the distinction of being the first woman in the modern world to head a government. She served as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on three separate occasions.
