India, Jan. 3 -- US President Donald Trump asserted on January 3 that the US intends to take an active role in shaping the future leadership and economic direction of Venezuela, following the "capture" of President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores. The couple, as per the President, is set to be transported to New York to face criminal charges.

In an interview with Fox News shortly after the operation, Trump underscored the commitment of the US to be significantly involved in the political transition of Venezuela.

"We'll be involved in it very much as to who will govern the country. We can't take a chance in letting somebody else run and just take over what he left, or left off," Trump told Fox News.
