India, Feb. 14 -- This Valentine's Day, stargazers in parts of the U.S. could be treated to a stunning display of the aurora borealis also known as the northern lights. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center has forecasted solar G1 geomagnetic storm conditions for Thursday evening, which could bring the auroras to Earth by Friday. While a G1 storm is considered minor on the planetary K-index, it still offers a chance for a mesmerizing celestial show.
The sun is currently in its solar maximum, a phase of its 11-year cycle when solar activity and energy discharge reach their peak. This heightened activity has led to an increase in northern lights displays over the past few months.
