India, Jan. 8 -- The US Senate on Thursday moved forward with a resolution that would bar President Donald Trump from undertaking any further military action against Venezuela without prior approval from the US Congress, days after Washington carried out military operations in the Latin American country.

The step clears the way for additional debate in the 100-member chamber.

According to Al Jazeera, the procedural vote to advance the War Powers resolution passed 52-47, with a handful of Republicans joining all Democrats in backing the measure.

Five Republican senators supported the bipartisan effort to advance the resolution, which seeks to prevent Trump from using additional military force against Venezuela.
