India, Dec. 2 -- Former Union minister and a tall tribal politician, Vishnu Deo Sai took over as chief minister of Chhattisgarh after the unexpected victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in assembly elections in 2023. Since then, his government has helped pave the way for a fierce onslaught by security forces against Maoism, which once ravaged the state but now appears to be on its last legs after a number of its senior commanders surrendered or perished in encounters. As CM, Sai has emphasised tribal welfare, grassroots development and governance reforms. But his most important intervention has been in ensuring law and order and ushering in development in parts of the state once roiled by left-wing extremism.
