New Delhi, Aug. 28 -- Sohan Singh should have been a free man in 2017. Convicted of rape in 2005 and sentenced to life imprisonment, his punishment was reduced to seven years by the Madhya Pradesh high court in 2017, by which time he had already spent 12 years in prison. Yet Singh walked out of jail only in June 2025 - eight years later. The Supreme Court has expressed anguish over the lapse, calling the episode "quite shocking" and demanding an explanation from the Madhya Pradesh government on how Singh remained in prison long after completing his sentence.
