New Delhi, Aug. 14 -- Direct tax arrears jumped by Rs.4.45 lakh crore in about four-and-a-half months to over Rs.47.52 lakh crore in June 2025 mainly because of penalties and interest accumulations on legacy dues pending since the mid-1990s, official data submitted in the Parliament. Out of over Rs.47.52 lakh crore direct tax arrears as on June 2025, a total Rs.35.48 lakh crore amount involves 55,054 cases where dues are Rs.10 crore and above. These include 25,428 cases pertaining to corporates with over Rs.18.71 lakh crore dues and 29,626 non-corporate assesses, mainly individual taxpayers with Rs.16.77 lakh crore arrears.
