India, March 27 -- Maharashtra government wants to encourage construction of iconic buildings in Mumbai that would become the identity of the city. A new policy would be introduced by the government to this end, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde announced in the legislative council on Wednesday.

"Mumbai has a unique identity due to certain iconic buildings built during the British era," he said and added that the state government has drafted a policy to encourage construction of iconic buildings that would have distinct characteristic. "Mumbai is a world class city, The government feels the need to encourage construction of more such buildings. This will add to beautification of Mumbai and boost tourism."
