New Delhi, Feb. 16 -- Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on Saturday said "external elements" were spreading lies about the institution through "misleading and defamatory" messages in an attempt to defame the university amid ongoing protests by a section of students. JMI's statement was in response to allegations by the protesters that it publicised the personal details of students allegedly suspended for participating in protests and defacing university property.

Since February 10, students have been protesting against the suspension of two PhD scholars for allegedly leading an unauthorised protest in December last year. Since the protests began, the number of suspended students has allegedly risen to 17.
