India, Nov. 7 -- The Supreme Court on Friday refused to interfere with the Madhya Pradesh high court's decision upholding the demolition of the 200-year-old Takiya Masjid in Ujjain, dismissing a plea filed by worshippers who challenged the state's action and sought reconstruction of the mosque.

A bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said it found no infirmity in the high court's ruling and that the petitioners were free to pursue remedies available under law, including compensation where due.

"This is a case that warrants immediate intervention," senior advocate MR Shamshad, appearing for the petitioners, urged, as he argued that the mosque was razed to expand a parking facility for the adjoining Mahakaleshwar Temple.
