NEW DELHI, Dec. 6 -- The Supreme Court on Friday quashed criminal proceedings against former member of Parliament Sanghmitra Maurya and her father, former Uttar Pradesh legislator Swami Prasad Maurya, in a case where she was accused of marrying a man without annulling her earlier marriage. The top court, which had in August 2024, stayed the trial, held that the ingredients of cheating were not made out against the former MP and the remedy, if at all, was available under civil law and not criminal. A bench of justices MM Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma said, "We are of the considered view that continuing these proceedings will be an abuse of law."
