New Delhi, Oct. 18 -- The Supreme Court on Friday said that the protection afforded under law to transgender persons in India remains a "dead letter" and an "empty formality" as it issued a slew of directions to help protect the rights of the community. Noticing gaps in the enforcement of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 and the corresponding rules of 2020, the court formed an advisory committee headed by former Delhi high court judge Asha Menon to formulate an equal opportunity policy for transgenders in areas of employment and education and to identify gaps in existing policy, inclusive medical care, and suggest remedies within a period of six months.
