New Delhi, March 20 -- The Supreme Court administration on Wednesday openly opposed two top court judgments that mandated a structured process for designating senior advocates, calling for a return to the traditional secret ballot system.
Appearing before a special bench reconsidering the 2017 and 2023 rulings in the matter brought to the court by senior advocate Indira Jaising for ushering in objectivity in the process, the Supreme Court's secretary general argued for scrapping the permanent committee responsible for assessing senior advocate designations. Instead, the administration favoured restoring the old system, where judges cast secret votes to decide whom to confer the honour upon.
