Nagpur, March 31 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday described the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as the "vatvruksh", or banyan tree, of India's culture, saying that the Sangh's ideals and principles were aimed at protecting national consciousness.

Visiting the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, Modi said: "RSS is the banyan tree of India's immortal culture and modernisation whose ideals and principles are to protect the national consciousness."

He also paid tributes at the memorials dedicated to RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, and second chief MS Golwalkar.
