India, July 8 -- Amid an escalating language row in Maharashtra, several members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were detained after being denied permission for a protest march in Thane.

Prohibitory orders were issued regarding the assembly of people, which triggered protests from Raj Thackeray's party members, who alleged that the state government was not allowing "Marathi people's march".

However, the Maharashtra government said that the party was allowed to take out a protest, but only the police could decide the route, given traffic and crowd management.
