New Delhi, Feb. 17 -- As the crowd swelled and word about the stampede spread at New Delhi railway station, porters - the backbone of a station who are often overlooked - were among the first to respond, rushing to rescue unconscious passengers from platforms 14 and 15. "Such a rush was never witnessed until Kumbh," said Ram Avtar, 42, a porter from Bihar. "I carried at eight people. We had to cross tracks and a static train to get them out."P6
