India, Feb. 11 -- A PhD research scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur reportedly died by suicide in his hostel room on Monday evening, police officers aware of the matter said. They said the student joined the institute last July on a UGC fellowship. This was the fourth suicide on the campus in the past year. The institute's security team alerted the police around 5.20pm about the student's death. The research scholar was taken to a health centre, where he was declared dead on arrival. "A police team, along with forensic experts, was sent to the institute," said deputy commissioner of police (west) Rajesh Kumar Singh.
