Panchkula, May 11 -- A Jalandhar resident was acquitted in a railway theft case after the government railway police (GRP) in Chandigarh failed to provide evidence of ownership of the allegedly stolen items - a mobile phone and some cash.

The court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Ajay Kumar acquitted Kumod Kumar, who was booked under Section 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code in May 2022.

In his judgment, the CJM highlighted the cross-examination of assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Manjeet Singh, who admitted that no information about the mobile phone was received from the telecom company and that no theft complaint had been registered before Kumar's apprehension on May 12, 2022.
