India, Dec. 31 -- On April 22, terrorists gunned down 26 tourists in a picturesque meadow in Kashmir's Pahalgam, marking the worst attack on civilians in the restive region in nearly two decades. The deadly attack, which came during US vice president JD Vance's visit to India, took place in Baisaran meadow, around five kilometres from Pahalgam town. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, its most extensive military strikes on Pakistan since 1971. The country's defence forces targeted Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir with precision missile and air strikes. A ceasefire was agreed on May 10.
