New Delhi, Feb. 7 -- The Centre clarified on Thursday that it is not considering any proposals to increase the maximum working hours amid recent debates sparked by corporate leaders advocating for longer workweeks. In a written response to a question posed by Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, the Union labour and employment ministry confirmed, "No such proposal to increase the maximum working hours is under consideration of Government."
The question arose amid discussions prompted by suggestions from Larsen and Toubro Limited (L&T) chairman and managing director N Subrahmanyan and Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. Murthy had called for a 70-hour workweek, while Subrahmanyan proposed a 90-hour workweek, including Sundays.
