India, Feb. 16 -- Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus on Monday announced his resignation ahead of the formation of Tarique Rahman's BNP government in Dhaka.

The chief advisor of the interim government, which was formed following Sheikh Hasina's exit, made the announcement in a farewell broadcast to the nation before handing over to an elected government.

"Today, the interim government is stepping down. But let the practice of democracy, freedom of speech, and fundamental rights that has begun not be halted," Yunus said in an address.

Yunus had returned to Bangladesh in August 2024, days after the fall of Hasina government.
