India, March 27 -- Manipur's Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba on Thursday demanded implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) to identify illegal immigrants in the strife-torn state.

Sanajaoba said the government should implement NRC to detect illegal immigrants with 1951 as the base year before the delimitation process is started in the state since its demography had undergone striking changes over the last decades.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour, the BJP MP said it would not be conducive to alter the existing electoral constituencies of the state on account of the present law and order situation in Manipur. The state is currently under President's Rule.
