imphal, April 7 -- An irate mob on Sunday set fire to the residence of Bharatiya Janata Party's state minority morcha president Asker Ali, officials said on Sunday, soon after he voiced his support to the Waqf Amendment Act.

The incident happened at Lilong in Thoubal district, the officials said.

In a post on Facebook on Saturday, Ali said, "Do not do politics on Waqf Amendment Bill. Welcome Bill. We support WAB", as he tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah and Kiren Rijiju, and BJP Minority Morcha national president Jamal Siddiqui.

On Sunday, a large mob reached Ali's residence in Lilong Haoreibi Sambrukhong, Thoubal district. The group first vandalised the property before setting it ablaze.
