New Delhi, Jan. 28 -- Maharashtra topped the list of states by collecting little over Rs.1.90 lakh crore of compensation cess under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, on items such as automobiles, coal, aerated water and tobacco products from July 2017 to September 2024, followed by Uttar Pradesh (Rs.93,968 crore) and Karnataka (Rs.82,331 crore), according to government data.

Odisha and Tamil Nadu were only other states to collect over Rs.50,000 crore compensation cess since July 1, 2017. While Odisha's total revenue was Rs.52,797 crore, Tamil Nadu collected Rs.51,428 crore in the same period.
