India, April 19 -- Maharashtra's school education department is considering mandating uniforms for teachers across the state, school education minister Dada Bhuse announced during a recent function at a school in Ajang, Malegaon. The proposal has already triggered opposition from the teaching community who argue that it distracts from more pressing educational concerns. "Just like doctors and police officers have uniforms, why not teachers?" Bhuse said. A teacher from Thane, however, said, "We need support for academic resources, not a uniform mandate." P13
