India, Dec. 24 -- A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Taiwan's southeastern coastal county of Taitung on Wednesday, the island's weather administration said, with no immediate reports of damage.

The quake also shook buildings in the capital Taipei and occurred at a depth of 11.9 km (7.39 miles), the administration added.

Reuters also reported that Wednesday's earthquake triggered strong tremors across the city.

Taiwan sits near the junction of two tectonic plates and is highly prone to earthquakes.
