New Delhi, April 16 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed display of Urdu as an additional language on the signboard of a municipal council building in Akola district of Maharashtra, emphasising that "language belongs to a community, to a region, to people; and not to a religion".
"Language is not religion. Language does not even represent religion. Language belongs to a community, to a region, to people; and not to a religion," a bench comprising justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K Vinod Chandran said, dismissing plea that objected to display of an Urdu signboard outside Patur civic body office.
