LUCKNOW/KANPUR, May 17 -- Samples collected from 16-year-old lion Pataudi, who died at the Kanpur Zoo on Thursday, have returned positive for the H5 strain of avian influenza, officials said on Friday, adding that the report arrived on Thursday night.
This is the second death due to bird flu at UP zoos, after an over two-year-old tigress, Shakti, died at Gorakhpur Zoo on May 7, triggering panic among forest officials who have ordered closure of several zoos and animal parks and imposed precautionary measures. "IVRI, Bareilly, has confirmed that the lion was infected with H5 strain of avian influenza," Kanpur zoo director Sharadha Yadav said. htc
