India, June 23 -- Amid counting of votes for the bypoll to Kaliganj assembly seat on Monday, a nine-year-old girl was killed in a bomb explosion in the village in West Bengal's Nadia district, police said.

According to a police officer cited in a news agency PTI report, the girl was injured and later succumbed to her injuries after being allegedly hit by a bomb that exploded on Monday afternoon at Barochandgar under Kaliganj police station limits.

Counting for the Kaliganj assembly bypoll was underway when the incident took place.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee assured that the police will take strict legal action against the culprits.
