Justice Kant says same-day listing 'only if someone is being hanged'
New Delhi, Sept. 25 -- Supreme Court judge justice Surya Kant on Wednesday said he would not order same-day listing of a case unless "someone is about to be hanged," stressing the intense workload of judges and the toll it takes on their sleep and wellbeing.
Heading a bench with justices Ujjal Bhuyan and N Kotiswar Singh, justice Kant was dealing with requests for urgent listing of cases. Such mentioning is ordinarily taken up by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai, the master of the roster, but since the CJI is currently presiding over a five-judge constitution bench, the responsibility fell on the second senior-most judge.
