India, Sept. 1 -- As was the case last year, Indians comprised the largest country cohort making refugee claims in Canada though they also accounted for a high percentage of refusals. An immigration expert in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has argued that the rising claims are due to unscrupulous gaming of the refugee system. Between January and June this year, India topped the list with 9,947 claims referred to the Refugee Protection Division of the Immigration Board of Canada. Indians accounted for over 18% of the total 55,093 claims. In second place, those from Haiti accounted for 12% (6,716) of the total while Nigerians were third at 6.4% (3,548).
