India, June 26 -- Democratic Party's Zohran Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City's mayoral primary on Wednesday, a political upset that positions the 33-year-old state representative with Indian roots to become the city's first Muslim mayor if he wins the general election in November.

Mamdani's victory over the 67-year-old Cuomo marked a significant win for the progressive wing of the party over its establishment candidate. Cuomo, who stepped down as governor in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, had been heavily favoured entering the primary race.
